Drive System

The drive is the opener mechanism used to raise and lower the garage door.

  • The chain drive is the most common and the most affordable among the three kinds of garage door drives on the market. It is effective and low maintenance. The only downside to this system is that it can be very noisy.
  • The belt drive is the most quiet as it operates with a rubber belt and reduces vibrations and metal-on-metal contact, which makes the chain drive noisy. However, this opener is also usually the most expensive.
  • The screw drive works with few moving parts and may come in a plastic-lined track that allows it to bring the noise level down. The screw drive costs midway between the chain and belt drives.

Security and Safety

To guard against intruders, make sure that the garage door opener system has secure electronic codes or uses rolling codes where new codes are generated every time the door is opened or closed. In many countries the law requires that garage door openers should be able to stop and back up whenever its sensors detect an obstruction (like a car or a person). It goes without saying that this essential for the garage door system you choose, despite the slightly higher cost.

Remote and Fixed Controls

The remote control is used to open the garage door while you are still inside your car. Older models are somewhat bulky and it pays to check if the remotes are small enough to fit your key ring. Fixed controls are usually located on the wall inside or outside the garage. They can be keyless pads for easy acces without key or remote. Also check to see if your garage door opener remote can be hooked up to the house alarm system, so that the alarm is disarmed when you camoe home and press the garage door remote.

Light and Backup Battery
Garage door openers are wired to swith on a light when in use. The standard openers have 60-watt bulbs but 100-watt units are available.
